Cultural Studies/ Superbad

In the movie Superbad, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg the characters are driven by partying and sex. The movie is trying to portray how in teen culture boys only care about getting "laid". They write a story about three boys who are on a mission to lose their virginity. The writers try to express how these young men are willing to do pretty much anything for sex. That being; getting a fake ID, running from cops, and getting intoxicated. Throughout the movie the three high school student encounter many troubles that some other students may encounter everyday. For example, that daily visit from the bully, stopping at a gas station for red bull before class, and not having a lab partner. The reason behind the story is to make a general audience laugh at something that they may have experienced in high school, and show that high school students are always going to be looking to accomplish a similar goal. Superbad may be targeted for a younger audience around the ages of 16-30, but if you have a aberrant sense of humor than the film can be just enough to make you laugh aswell.

  1. Good choice on a movie Teonne. I agree with you 100% on the purpose of this movie. I think most young men can relate to what those three guys went through during nearly every part of that movie. I think that even the female audience would enjoy seeing that even Hollywood filmmakers know exactly what young men are thinking about 100% if the time. They may not think that the guys at their school weren't too much different from any other guy at other schools around our country or even the world for that matter.

  2. I have seen the movie Superbad on two different occasions and I cannot remember one specific thing in the movie. I think that being a female, I might find the theme of this movie a little condescending and disrespectful. Men that seem to be obsessed with sex, pleasure, women etc. are appealing in my book. This movie may have a comic appeal and can make you laugh, but I don't think it contributes any true value. The actors I'm sure fit their roll and a lot of people can probably relate to the activities and scenario's acted in the film. However, because of my reaction to the movie Superbad, I would not recommend it to be watched.
