Hunsford Proposal - Doomed from the beginning
If Mr. Darcy has taken the manner in which he makes his exit like a true gentleman and applied that to the beginning of the proposal, he might have had a better chance of a positive outcome. Not only does it feel like he is shouting at her instead on holding a conversation with her, he stands while she sits. With Mr. Darcy standing is showing his power is dominating hers, that she is merely insignificant. I understand this is before the whole womens rights movement but if he truly wanted her hand in marriage, he would have tried all angles.
Not once does he address her by name, it is if he is making a general announcement to the public. Mr. Darcy should have had some personalization with his proposal speech.
On a defending note, Elizabeth, the woman Mr. Darcy is proposing to, already has a preconceived feeling about him which in the end of the clip she reveals to him. She had decided after knowing him for a month that she didn’t care for him. In other words Mr. Darcy was doomed, he was destined to get the negative response that he did.
