Exercise 15.7

The traditional lecture method of education has a number of problems. For example, the traditional lecture method ignores the fact that lots of people learn in various ways. In addition, the traditional approach to teaching reduces education to a transfer of information, which does not really teach it simply gives one the information and expects students to memorize the information that has been given to them. Making lectures available as pod-casts, however, will allow for those who need to listen to these pod-casts more flexibility. Pod-casts allow students to be more hands-on and allows them to be more engaged in the lecture they are accessing. There are three reasons that this teaching method should be adopted. One reason is that combining  technologies with traditional teaching methods will help fill the need that many students do not learn in the traditional sense. Another reason is that if students are absent from class due to factors they cannot control they will not have to miss the information that had been given during the class that they missed as they would have access to the recordings of that lecture so they can continue to be in a positive position in their studies. Finally, having access to the lectures whenever you need it to study, and having them available whenever you may want to listen to them to verify the information you are studying. For these reasons, I believe that offering the lectures as a pod-casts would allow a greater ease of access and availability, which would also give students flexibility in getting the information needed to keep students from falling behind, allowing ease and efficiency.

  1. Flexibility for today's student should be a must. I think pod-casts would help for the studying method using repetition to help drill what ever lecture was covered. I wouldn't agree to use it for students that missed class because it could be abused. Students that didn't care about the attendance could use pod-casts or similar methods to their advantage. That just might promote laziness in regards to actually attending. If students had special approved reasons for missing class(es) then I think it would be acceptable.

  2. You make several excellent points. The education system is very flawed, as anyone can see. I-for-one think that some traaditional teaching methods to work but others are completely ineffective. Personally I'm not a huge fan of online classes or the pod-cast style because everyone learns differently and this style just isn't my favorite way to learn, but for some people I know it has been extremely effective so I'd say that while the traditional teaching methods aren't fully effective for everyone the same can be said of the newer styles. Just my opinion.
