Judging from Mr Darcy's tone and and diction alone, you can tell he is a pretty arrogance man. His marriage proposal is even portrayed that way. The reason his proposal fails is because one, he speaks to her like he is better than her. For example, he demands her to listen to him he doesn't ask "You "must" allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you". It seems as if he isn't giving her much of a choice to listen and judging from the woman you can tell she isn't very found of this type of action. Mr. Darcy makes it seem like it is wrong for him to love her which isn't the best way to ask someone's and in marriage. He blatantly tells the woman that he doesn't want to love her but it can't be suppressed. Mr. Darcy makes it seem like he is only asking her to marry her to better off himself. What he could have done was eased her into the question. He should have told her that his heart doesn't have a choice. Mr. Darcy should have better worded his argument and not make it refute its self to the point where he persuades her not to marry him.
