The Obvious Choice
Anyone who has had to go to class during the day throughout the fall or spring semester has felt the frustration of not being able to find a parking space. The availability of parking has become a problem at the north west campus. The fall and spring semesters are the busiest time at Santa Fe College (SFC). Parking at SFC is insufficient to accommodate the amount of people who drive to this location. I propose that the employees that work at the north west campus be given a bonus for taking the bus to work. This would free up parking for students to park, and promote sustainability. Using public transportation by Santa Fe employees would further promote the effort to reduce the carbon footprint left by this institution. Some people might say that SFC should make the North Woods a parking lot, but that is not the solution for two reasons. It would destroy a natural habitat for the local wildlife and it wouldn't be utilized all year. Not destroying a natural habitat and promoting employees to think about the environment are two positive results of providing more parking for students. It's obvious the choice to provide more parking for students is to encourage employees to take public transportation to work.

I cannot agree with more on the parking issues at the location. However, have you noticed how many empty spots are in the reserved parking and car pool parking? May be the solution would be to build a parking garage where there is that large parking lot already that way no ,ore destruction of wildlife. Reduce some of the reserved parking and car pooling would also help.
ReplyDeleteI also believe this to be an issue. There is surely an inadequate parking spots for students. They may have this to encourage public transportation from the students. Seeing there are more students then teachers if students are using public transportation rather than teachers it truly would be better for the environment and the city its self. I also believe a parking garage may accommodate those who do drive to the school.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is a major problem on campus. There is inadequate parking spots for students on campus. I also believe that if some of the reserved parking spaces are limited then there will be more spaces for students to park. Also building a parking garage will definitely help to eliminate this problem. A parking garage along with parking that is already available will definitely relieve the parking situation. I also agree that reducing the some of the reserved parking as well as some of the carpool parking it would go along way towards minimizing this hazard. If more people not jut teachers would agree to use public transportation this would also go along way towards solving the parking problem. I have been late to class several times simply because the search for parking on campus was terrible. In the end having to walk ten minutes to class from one side of the campus to the other is a ridiculous notion.
ReplyDeleteGood proposal. I don't think schools will ever add parking lots to their campus because of the popularity of online classes. Parking lots cost a bunch of money, and online classes generate a ton of income while keeping overhead costs extremely low. I would have to say, don't hold your breath when it comes to additional parking.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first semester and the parking seems fine. Although my class is in the evening. I don't have any problems finding a parking spot close to my building.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think about that to do with the employees riding the bus. That is actually quite funny. Although it would be very helpful with openning up some spaces for the students who are paying to go to school, I couldn't actually see some of the people here giving up their right to drive themselves just to take a bus to help us out. But yes, I do agree it would help and I do agree about the shortage of parking spaces. It has been nice this summer to be able to take only a couple seconds to park rather than to search the whole campus for one spot. I'm not looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are already in a rush to get to class, and then have to struggle to find a parking spot it can be incredibly frustrating. Having a first come first serve parking lot should encourage all students to allow them plenty of time to find a parking spot or get alternative transportation such as the RTS, riding a bicycle, or even car pooling. It would be nice to have more parking because of the many students that attend Santa Fe. The only good way to do this would to rearranging the reserved parking because there are always open and don't have an issue.
