The traditional lecture method of education has a number of problems.
For example, you have to physically be there to take notes. Even if you received lecture notes from another student, it is not the same as listening to the lecture and writing down the notes in an individuals own style. In addition, it is very difficult to write down and gather every single piece of information from a live lecture. Some professors do not like to be interrupted to answer questions, so one is forced to just keep writing down as much as they can. Making lectures available as podcasts, however will eliminate both of these problems as the student can listen and watch them as their schedule, and repeat as necessary to get all of the information from it if they missed it the first time around.
There are three reasons that this teaching method should be adopted. One reason will be that the student does not need to be present. Another reason is that the professor will not be interrupted with questions, the student can email the professor questions, and the professor can answer at his or her leisure. Finally, the professor only has to do the lecture once and they can assign the student to listen to it semester after semester and not have repeat themselves over and over.
For these reasons, I believe that that making podcasts of lectures available to students benefits both the professor and student in an equal basis.
I happen to agree with Jay's posting wholeheartedly. Hearing about a lecture from another student or using another students lecture notes just does not compare with hearing the lecture for yourself. I think that professors need to take the time to actually try to take notes on a lecture that they know nothing about because some professors do not like to be interrupted it is potentially hard to pick up every single thing that is said by the professor. And by making lectures into pod-casts students will definitely be able to make up what they lack the first time around and not have to worry if they have missed a vital piece of information.
ReplyDeleteIt is improtant for a student to take notes for themselves because know one undestands their own written better than yourself. Instuctors have a lot to cover snd a short time to teach each student on their levels. with te podcast technology, this a way that students will have the ability to give each class its full attention.
ReplyDeleteI do think the idea of recording lectures is a fantastic idea. Sometimes, we are given an overload of information in a very short class time. During class you have to both focus on what the professor is saying and making your notes organized so that you can review what was in the lecture. In order to absorb the entire material the professor gives you, it would be very useful if students were able to review recordings of the lecture. This is a more organized way of learning. Students should always be encouraged to attend class but if it is absolutely impossible to do so then having recorded lectures is a great alternative.
