Discussion Post: Analyze the Ad

The argument the ad is proposing is that economic progress may be harming or killing the planet. There is some basis to the argument as the more advanced civilization becomes and the larger the population becomes it will need access to a larger quantity of scarce resources.
The main one it hints at in the ad is oil. The picture of someone filling their car up at the gas pump makes people think about oil and how it is indeed a scarce resource. It can be replenished but scientists aren’t fully sure on how long it actually takes for natural crude oil to form in the Earth’s crust.
Another image that is shown in the ad is one of a handgun. It is mainly used to symbolize the killing of the Earth as it’s pointed at a map but it also subtly refers to heavy metals. Guns are made up of various combinations of heavy metals such as aluminum, steel, and iron. These are all resources that are found naturally on Earth, but much like crude oil, it takes an indeterminable amount of time for them to actually form naturally. Other things that are made with these materials are cars, buildings, phones, computers and certain kinds of appliances. The larger the planet’s population becomes the more the demand for these resources will rise meaning the scarcer they will become. The scarcer the resources become the more mining companies will dig or mine to find them causing more damage to the planet as a whole.

  1. I completely agree with what you are saying. With our natural resources being used up for things that we really don't need, it is taking from the things we do and will need in the future. Our atmosphere is opening I believe over one of the big oceans and the more we destroy this planet, the more it is going to open up and soon no one will be left to be able to use these resources so what is the point? We are all slowly killing ourselves.

  2. Your perspective is really on point. Our planet has been "sick" for decades. All because of technology and humans becoming too smart. Just because we've figured out how to make all this fascinating and demanding technology does not mean that we are producing it intelligently. Humans may think about the negative reactions to their success but it does not matter to them the risks they are taking. These risks are definite causes for our atmosphere breaking down, decreased food supply, and our separation from the natural world. Which we use to be apart of. Our consciousness is overridden when power and big bucks are at the end of the tunnel. This way of thinking is a major human malfunction.

  3. Good post. Yes we all have come up with all of these great innovations, but instead of patting ourselves on the back we should all become independent of oil. I think there are people that have tried this and failed because big oil has kept them down. I think the gun symbolizes suicide as that is something that can be controlled.

  4. I really agree with your post. It seems that the more we develop our planet the more we cause it harm. Whether people realize it or not our natural resources are dwindling down lower and lower. And although we have come up with a lot of great inventions our dependence on oil will put us into a compromising positions. Instead of thinking about what the financial gain may be we should look at how are actions affect our planet, because every action we take against our planet causes an action one that can be positive or negative. We should look into what we can do to protect our planet and preserve it for the future. Because if we do not preserve our planet and our resources we wont be able to prosper and help our plant to survive.
