As shown in the picture, this is an ad for the alcoholic beverage Bacardi. With this ad, the main audience that they seem to be trying to capture would be mostly males, but a good percent could also be of female. The woman is dressed in a leopard type bikini with skinny jeans and a short sleeve, button down shirt which is open, of course. In my opinion she seems dressed in a "slutty" form of clothing due to the way she presents herself in the ad. Dragging anyone in whose intrigued by the pose and look of her body. I believe its in the same family as a trap. Though its an ad about alcohol, no one can seem to get past the fact that the woman is undressing with a drink in her hand. It sends a message to the people who uses the wrong head on their body to think with. Basically giving them the inclination that if they buy this alcohol and give it to a girl, they can get the drunk enough to get lucky. That gives them more of a reason to buy it rather than if they had seen just a picture of the bottle.
With the way they portray women on this ad, I understand it as them losing their respect. Though its a paycheck for the woman, since all she has to do is pose for the camera, it still sends a message out which everyone has now interpreted as woman can be slutty, yet if you see a guy doing the same thing they see it more as them being sexy rather than slutty or easy.
"Pussy cat by day / Bacardi by night" This is another example of what I had just stated. It has nothing to do with the alcohol itself, so why is it even there? To entice the readers. The only thing it this whole ad, besides the bottom, that has anything to do with what they are advertising would be the drink in her hand.
The other thing I though was funny is the small, tiny print at the bottom of the ad. No matter how you blow it up, you cant read it. It could take about where it originally came from all the way to all the bad things that could happen to you if you drank it but you would never know since it is too small to read. But its there so if something happens and you try to sue them all they have to do is get the magnifying glass out and show it to you. They see it as your fault, not theirs, that you couldn't read it.
I debated on posting this same advertisement, but I chose the other Bacardi ad. This one is very similar as a Librarian could be considered a Pussy Cat by day. I would venture to guess that this ad campaign ran at the same time, and the idea came from the same people. Maxx pointed out much of the same comparisons I saw in the ad that I wrote, so I guess a large percentage of people would see right through these ads and sew exactly for what they are.
ReplyDeleteI read an article once by a feminist that says women should pose nude, and pose for pictures like these as they will be earning a big paycheck and the real fool is the one writing it.
It is ads like these that goes to show that sex sells. I mean honestly, are they really trying to promote the Bacardi? Or are they trying to promote her body? This ad has got to be a target for the immature males among our society whom can be lead more or less by the show of skin, with the innuendo of getting lucky. In my opinion, you made a great observation on this ad Maxx because I hope no self- respectful female would ever consider insinuating her body in that way, unless she was other than self- respectful. Although, by the look of her pose, I would say she already has had too much to drink.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sarah, it seems that they are selling sex instead of product. This ad is directed to the young men in our society and gives females a bad name. Because of today's society, this is what companies are doing to increase revenue. In my opinion, I feel that women who have high moral standards would not participate in this type of publicity. This type of ad is definitley down grading young women in the society. This type of advertisement is not the first nor will it be the last in today's society.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Sarah, most companies realize that sex often sells better than the product that they are advertising. Although this ad does give women a bad name, women should be more aware of the way they present themselves to others if they do not want to be labeled as a slut. I also agree with Maxx because i believe that no self respecting young lady would or should allow herself to be portrayed in such a manner. This ad targets young males that should use their mind for more than just sex. Young men and women need to respect themselves on a level other than just physical.
ReplyDeleteIt really is that age-old "sex sells" idea. Which is true, mind you. Take a look at Bacardi's stock sometime and you will see. They advertise to men with sexy, presumably sexually active women and at the same time use those same women to subconsciosly say to women "if she can look this hot drinking Bacardi and have this much fun with all the men wanting her, so can you if you drink Bacardi". Which is not accurate, is not true, and is in my opinion very irresponsible and just plain stupid. Nobody gets to be in better shape of looks better by drinking alcohol. Quite the opposite. Ads like these cause bad decisions to be made, thus causing bad, self-destructive habits to develop. And do liquor companies like Bacardi take any responsibility for it? Of course not. They protect themselves and their so-called "consciences" by saying "drink responsibly" at the end of their ads or in find print, as if to say "By the way, this is bad for you and could potentially lead to your's or someone else's misfortune, injury, or even death. Don't be stupid." And then proceed to provide the stupid decision-making substance.
ReplyDeleteThis and many other alcohol related ads use the provocative dressed people to draw you in and entice you to purchase thier product. Based on looks and not an intellectual decision, there are so many bad decisions made from this simple misconception of alcohol is great for you. Judging from previous comments on this, we all seem to be on the same page.
